Malawi Defence Force says on alert amid Mozambique tensions

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander, Paul Valentino Phiri, has said the institution is on high alert due to rising tensions in neighbouring Mozambique.

Phiri has since urged people in border districts not to panic.

He spoke Monday during the Inter-Unit March and Shoot Competition at Choma Gally Range in Mzuzu, which attracted 13 barracks and units from across the country.

Leading soldiers by impressively shooting on target, Phiri said MDF has invested heavily in troop training to ensure that soldiers are prepared to defend Malawi when necessary.

He also disclosed that MDF has implemented a number of reforms, including establishing new units, updating military equipment and prioritising hands-on training.

“Let me assure Malawians that we are on alert in case of any attack. We are not in any conflict with our neighbouring countries but should we be provoked, we are ready to defend ourselves,” Phiri said.

He added that MDF has opened recruitment for young people with top qualifications, with plans to send them abroad for education before specific training at designated bases.

The soldiers arrived at Choma on Sunday night after walking approximately 200 kilometres from Luwalazi in Nkhotakota.

Cobbe Barracks from Zomba emerged as the winner, followed by Mvera in Dowa and Moyale Barracks.

Cobbe Barracks team leader, Lieutenant Gibson Chinula, said the competition served as a valuable refresher, helping them address challenges encountered along the way.

Chinula attributed their victory to teamwork and their strategic tactics.

“We are strong and we have demonstrated our determination to defend Malawi. Therefore, we promise to continue taking these competitions seriously, as they are beneficial not only for MDF as a whole but also for each individual,” Chinula said.

Over 500 soldiers participated in the competition, with female soldiers among the top performers.
