Luanar to open mega farms

By Wezzie Gausi:

Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) has announced plans to establish mega farms as a strategy to generate income for the institution and contribute to Malawi’s food security agenda.

Luanar Council Chairperson Professor Zachary Kasomekera described the initiative as a transformative step for the university.

He highlighted that mega farms would serve as both an income-generating venture and a practical platform for agricultural research and training.

“As an agricultural university, venturing into mega farms will not only enhance our financial sustainability but also provide students with hands-on experience. These farms will serve as a model for modern agricultural practices, contributing to national efforts in achieving food security,”Kasomekera said.

Kasomekera further emphasised that the initiative aligns with the university’s mission to lead in agricultural innovation and community impact, noting that Luanar aims to collaborate with farmers and stakeholders to share expertise and improve agricultural productivity.

Chairperson for the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture Sameer Suleman expressed strong support for Luanar’s megafarms initiative but criticised the government for its lack of commitment to similar ventures.

“The idea of mega farms is crucial for addressing food insecurity and boosting agricultural exports. However, the government has failed to fully implement its own megafarms projects. We need serious investment in infrastructure, equipment, and policies to ensure such initiatives succeed,” Suleman said.

Mega farms, which involve large-scale farming operations using advanced technologies and irrigation systems, have been identified as a potential solution to Malawi’s food security challenges.

These farms can produce high yields of staple crops, diversify agricultural production and create employment opportunities.
