Likoma boat accident draws calls for proper vessels

The government has been pressed to invest in public transportation services on Lake Malawi.

In the observation of Lucky Mbewe, a social commentator, this would assist the country in preventing avoidable deaths on the lake.

It follows the death of 11 people who perished in the lake after the boat they were traveling in capsized on Saturday morning.

Authorities have revealed that the vessel was carrying 30 people who were expected to board MV Chilembwe.

Meanwhile, President Lazarus Chakwera has said he is closely monitoring investigations into the unlawful operation of an unregistered vessel.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Mbewe said there was a need to invest heavily in transportation services on the lake that would cater to Chizumulu and Likoma island residents.

According to Mbewe, this would also address the persistent problem of having unregistered vessels sail on the country’s water bodies.
