Local traders against latest decree on crops

Local traders have faulted the government for introducing a license that would allow its holders to buy crops from every district of the country.

It comes after the Ministry of Agriculture announced an upward adjustment to the fee for crop produce buying licenses.

Among others, the fee for the license, which was previously at 10,000 kwacha but is now at 50,000, will have a validity of one year and will be valid in any district.

However, Tenson Mulimbula, Secretary General for the Small Scale Business Operators Association of Malawi, has described the decision as inconsiderate.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Mulimbula said the move is likely to create a monopolistic business environment, in the process favoring businesses with large capital.

Mulimbula has since requested authorities to reverse the decision and reintroduce specific licenses for specific districts.
