Lazarus Chakwera calls for endurance

By Wezzie Gausi:

President Lazarus Chakwera has called on African leaders to persevere through adversity and remain committed to visionary leadership as the continent navigates complex socio-economic challenges.

Speaking during the official opening of the Global Leadership Summit at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe Thursday, Chakwera likened his leadership journey to the biblical story of Moses, urging leaders not to abandon their people when faced with hardship.

“The solution to the challenges we are facing as a nation on our way to our own 2063 Vision Promised Land is not to go back to slavery, but to encourage each other to endure and keep going,” he said.

Chakwera said Malawi’s path to prosperity had not been easy, recalling obstacles such as hunger, conflict, protests and disasters, which he described as a “wilderness” phase meant to refine and purify the nation.

He warned against nostalgic tendencies to revert to failed systems, stating, “Each pain we suffer is a purifying furnace that God is using to sift us as a people and to disqualify from our midst those God does not want us to be deceived or cheated by”.

In a reflection on his beginnings in the village of Kasiya, Chakwera attributed his rise to leadership to divine intervention rather than entitlement.

On his part, Malawi Country Coordinator for Global Leadership Network, Victor Mughogho, challenged delegates to embrace transformational leadership.

“World-class leadership is the foundation of sustainable development in every sector of society,” Mughogho said.

He urged participants to craft actionable visions that would positively impact their communities.

Held under the theme ‘Design Your Tomorrow’, the summit attracted delegates from around the globe, including representatives of the Co-op of Moldavia, Austria- Hungary, and a high-level delegation from Tanzania.

The two-day summit aims to inspire current and emerging leaders to rise above present-day challenges and lead with purpose, vision and integrity.
