Transport and Public Works Minister Jacob Hara has disclosed that the 60 kilometres M05 Road from Kaphatenga in Salima District to Benga in Nkhotakota District will cost the government close to K64 billion.
He said this during the inspection of the road.
“The government is committed to constructing durable roads across the country.
“As you know, the President [Lazarus Chakwera] has charged us to build good and strong roads which will last for over 40 years. These projects are not being implemented for campaign purposes but for, rather, national development purposes,” Hara said.
He said road construction works had delayed because the road is in a lakeshore area where a horde of rivers drain into the lake, hence the need to construct bridges in countless places.
“There are so many drainage facilities on this road. We are talking about 124 culverts on this 60-kilometre section. We believe that these will enable the road to withstand pressure, more so because this, being an area along the lakeshore, is a flood-prone area,” Hara said.
Meanwhile, Stuart Benson from Senior Chief Mwanza in Salima District has urged the government to go for durability other than low cost when constructing roads.
“Otherwise, we will continue to register cases of road accidents due to the poor state of many roads in the country,” Benson said.
The Government of Malawi is constructing the road through the Roads Authority.
China Railway No. 20 Bureau Group Corporation commenced construction works on November 18 2022, with the works set for completion on November 18 2024.
