Hindus commend government for freedom of worship

Socio-spiritual Hindu faith members under Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (Baps) have commended the government for allowing them to pray freely in Malawi.

The members said this when they inaugurated their Mzuzu Mandir (Temple), an event that started with a march that attracted people from Zambia and Tanzania, among other countries.

Apart from international delegates, the opening of the state-of-the-art Mandir, which has been built within Kaning’ina area, attracted business people, traditional leaders and other community members.

One of the Malawi temple members Jatendra Patel said they would continue supporting Malawians in different sectors such as health and environment.

“We have been planting trees, donating blood and also supporting people in different ways because we know that we are part of Malawi. In fact, we are Malawians because we have stayed here for decades, meaning that this is our home. We thank the government because of allowing us to worship freely,” Patel said.

Mzuzu City Mayor, Councillor Kondwani Brian Nyasulu, who was the guest of honour, said besides the elegant temple, the Hindus are also investing “heavily” in the city.

“So, we are happy for them and their faith and we will work with them so that we develop Mzuzu City,” Nyasulu said.

The Mzuzu Mandir is the first to be constructed and inaugurated.

The second Mandir, which is the biggest, is under construction in Lilongwe.

Among other beliefs, Baps followers do not take alcohol and meat and are cautioned against adultery.

Their priests do not marry and are separated from their parents once they accept priesthood.
