Farmers are calling for the implementation of the Farmers’ Organization Development Strategy for the country to achieve innovative farming effectively.
The call by the Farmers Union of Malawi, one of over 170 exhibitors, was made on the sidelines of the ongoing 20th National Agriculture Fair, which is underway in Blantyre.
The fair is being held under the theme “Driving towards export-oriented agriculture through commercialization and innovation” and will run until August 31st.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Derick Kapolo, the Union’s Head of Agri-business, was of the view that the strategy would equip farmers to produce and value-add their products.
According to Kapolo, this would be achieved as the strategy provides for the formulation of cooperatives consisting of small-scale farmers.
Meanwhile, Wonderful Mkhutche, Communications and Planning Officer at ECOJEN Malawi, a biogas system installer, said using biogas is not only cost-effective but also effective in environmental conservation.
With this, Mkhutche called for increased awareness on biogas usage, noting its innovative nature, saying it produces fertilizer as a by-product.
