The 20th National Agriculture Fair, which ended on Saturday in Blantyre, has proven to be an ideal platform for enhancing links in the agriculture supply chain.

Some farmers and farm-based organisations (FBOs) secured trade agreements valued at over K900 million, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push towards commercialisation of the agriculture sector.

The fair, which opened on Thursday, provided a crucial platform for FBOs to showcase their products and capabilities to a variety of businesses, fostering relationships that are expected to boost the agricultural sector’s contribution to the national economy.

Transforming Agriculture Through Diversification and Entrepreneurship Programmes Value Chain and Agribusiness specialist Linda Magombo Munthali rated the fair highly.

“Some of the FOBs that came grow rice and soya beans, among others, and this event has been essential for them to not only showcase their products but also build credibility with businesses looking to source agricultural products locally,” Munthali said.

Global Seeds Marketing and Sales Manager Micheal Chibwe said the fair has helped in strengthening ties between his organisation and seed farmers.

“We buy seeds from local farmers and many of them are present here. So the fair has provided an excellent opportunity for us to solidify our relationships with them, ensuring that we continue to work closely together to meet the growing demand for high-quality seeds,” Chibwe said.

Greenbelt Authority, a key player in Malawi’s agricultural sector, also reported significant achievements at the fair.

Greenbelt Authority Chief Executive Officer Eric Chidzungu said the exhibitions at the fair show special prowess the agriculture sector has.

Malawi Bureau of Standards Public Relations Officer Monica Khombe urged small and medium enterprises to obtain the necessary licences to gain access to formal markets.

This year’s fair was held under the theme ‘Boosting Exports Through Enhanced Production’.
