The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) has expressed confidence in achieving its goal of connecting 180,000 new customers under the Malawi Electricity Access Project (Meap) by June.
This follows successful procurement of 92,000 electricity meters along with other essential materials including poles, conductors and LED bulbs, to facilitate new connections.
Speaking during a media visit to the Maep Warehouse in Lunzu, Blantyre, Escom Chief Operations Officer Maxwell Mulimakwenda said the corporation had sufficient materials and was on track to meeting its target.
“This project is well on course. We have the necessary materials, which is why we are encouraging Malawians to come forward and benefit from these connections,” Mulimakwenda said.
He further disclosed that Escom had already connected 98,000 customers, leaving a balance of 82,000 more connections in order to reach the Maep target.
Additionally, he revealed that 47,000 customers were already registered and awaiting connection while urging more people to apply to take advantage of the available materials.
Mulimakwenda also warned the public against paying bribes to individuals who falsely claiming to facilitate faster connections.
“No one should ask you for money to get connected. We have the meters, we have the materials and we have engaged contractors to assist with the connections. Sooner or later, we will reach you. Do not give your hard-earned money to anyone,” he said.
Mulimakwenda also reminded customers that those unable to pay the full connection fee of K93,300 upfront could make an initial deposit of K17,475 and settle the remaining balance in installments after being connected to the grid.
