Dodma enhances reconstruction drive in Nsanje

All is now set for the official rolling out of the much-anticipated reconstruction project of Muona Primary School in the lower shire district of Nsanje.

The development follows a financial boost of K300, 000, 000 that the project has received from the Presidential Charity Initiative, through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA).

Muona Primary School was one of the schools in Nsanje district that were damaged by rains sparked by Tropical Cyclone Freddy some two years ago.

Speaking on Friday during the symbolic presentation of the funds at Muona Primary School, Charles Kalemba, the Commissioner for DODMA revealed that the additional K300, 000, 000 presented on the day has brought the total amount of funds set aside for the reconstruction project to K525, 000, 000, following the presentation of K225, 000, 000 late last year.

Kalemba: We’re taking big steps.

“With these funds, we will now be able to construct an administration block and four classroom blocks, each having two classrooms. That means the school will have 8 classes for Standard 1 to 8, as was the case before,” said Kalemba.

Initially, the project was meant for Mpatsa Primary School in the same district, before it was foiled by some land disputes between government and the communities.

Among those that have welcomed the commencement of Muona Primary School’s reconstruction project is Bertha Mulumbe Makungwa, the Headmistress for the school, who observed that the number of pupils attending classes at the school has been registering a significant drop since it was hit by Cyclone Freddy.

“Since the school blocks were damaged by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, we have had no safe place to accommodate our pupils. In times of rains, we are forced to prematurely dismiss our classes, a development that has forced many students to drop out of school. We are therefore, expecting the numbers to improve once this reconstruction project is completed,” said Makungwa.
