A couple has died at Chemusa Market in Blantyre following a fire that gutted down its shop.
Blantyre Police Station spokesperson Peter Mchiza confirmed the development, saying investigations were underway.
Mchiza said they were yet to get details about the deceased and on what really happened.
But eye witness Patrick Makwale said the fire, which also razed down four other shops, started due to an explosion of flammable items as the woman was cooking inside the shop.
“The couple was selling things like paint and other flammable items. As such, one of the jerry cans exploded as a result of a charcoal stove, thereby causing the fire and the deceased failed to escape,” Makwale said.
He said firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to contain the fire.
