
Cotton will earn the country at least K28 billion if 1 kilogramme of the commodity is bought at this year’s farm gate-price of K1400.
Over 20,000 metric tons are estimated to be produced in 2024/2025 cotton farming season an increase from last year’s 8000 metric tons.
The farm gate price this year has jumped upwards with K500 from the recent.
Chairperson of Cotton Council of Malawi, Cosmas Luwanda has attributed the growth of the industry to deliberate efforts put in place towards boosting the sector.
However, Luwanda has told MIJ Online that in the farming season, forex challenges were temporarily paralyzing the sector.
Cotton crop is Malawi’s fourth highest foreign exchange earner after Tobacco, Sugar and Tea.
