Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja has called on candidates in the July 23 by-elections in Mwasa Ward in Mangochi and Chilaweni Ward in Blantyre to conduct a peaceful campaign.
She made the call at Mapazi Primary School in Chilaweni, Blantyre yesterday when MEC received nomination papers from aspiring candidates.
Mtalimanja, a judge of the High Court of Malawi said the electoral process has been peaceful in the two wards and she expressed hope that this will continue.
“My message to the candidates and people of the two wards is for them to continue with a peaceful and smooth campaign so that we should not have any challenges,” she said.
On the nominations, Mtalimanja said there were no issues with the papers presented because a pre-checking exercise was conducted on Tuesday and all issues were ironed out.
At Chilaweni Ward, nine candidates presented their papers. They are Lucius Kasonya of Leadership with Compassion Party, Reuben Lungu of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Allan Chikomo of Umodzi Party (UP), Mulira Junior Mulirabello of Muviwachilungamo Revolution Party and independent candidate Maxwell Phiri.
Others are Ted Kaliati of People’s Development Party (PDP), Anthony Mitambo of United Democratic Front (UDF), Bernard Nteche of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and George Chiluma who is an independent.
In Mwasa Ward in Mangochi North East Constituency, six candidates presented their nomination papers.
They are Bridget Lynah Tedie of PDP, Andalason Madi of UP and Kida Adamu of DPP.
Others are MandeChipiliroNaisoni of Leadership with Compassion Party, Stewart Mwase of MCP and Assamu Mbwana Dickson of UDF.
Campaign period in the two wards will close on July 21 2024. n
