Agriculture Ministry promotes research

By Mphatso M’bang’ombe:

Controller of Agriculture Extension and Technical Services in the Ministry of Agriculture Alfred Mwenefumbo has said Malawi can make significant strides in agricultural transformation if farmers embrace modern technologies and innovations.

Mwenefumbo said this during an Agriculture Field Day Mega Demonstration which was organised under the Sustainable Agriculture Programme (SAP) II.

Stakeholders gathered in Chisepo Extension Planning Area, under Senior Chief Kayembe in Dowa District, to appreciate modern technologies.

“Taking research directly to community members is key to achieving goals outlined in the Malawi 2063 vision, particularly those under the Malawi Implementation Plan (MIP- 1), by 2030.

“Our hope and prayer is that, by 2030, farmers in Dowa District and beyond will have adopted many of the technologies that are cropping up,” Mwenefumbo said.

Bernadette Mukonyora, a representative of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (Ifad) in Malawi, expressed satisfaction with the active participation of community members in understanding technologies.

“The aspiration of Ifad is to see farmers being supported with the right technologies which are appropriate for their location and their agroecology. That way, the agriculture sector will thrive,” she said.

Mukonyora said the project is targeting 80,000 smallholder farmers and is aimed at promoting wealth creation, improving nutrition and enhancing food security in rural areas.
