World Vision Malawi says its staff will this week  visit the youths under its education sponsorship programme to appreciate how their education is progressing.

Speaking in Lilongwe yesterday during the launch of the Sponsorship Week, World Vision national director Francis Dube said each staff member is expected to visit and interview at least three beneficiaries.

“This week, our staff members will be busy visiting communities across Malawi. We do such monitoring periodically to collect fresh data for the smooth running of the programme,” he said.

Dube said many children during previous visits  raised challenges including early marriages.

The organisation’s sponsorship director Georgina Kamanga said 106 000 youths are under the programme.

She said the beneficiaries are selected based on many factors, including age and their focus on education and if they are also linked to their sponsors.

“We have 10 sponsors around the world and each sponsor is assigned a particular programme area. Sometimes these sponsors request to link up with beneficiaries,” Kamanga said.

A beneficiary Gideon Manda from Salima, said the programme has raised many children’s hopes of building a good future.

The organisation is also targeting to support 5.7 million childre who are food-insecure.

This year, the sponsorship week is being observed under the theme ‘Realising a child’s promise’.
