Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) Chairperson, Judge Annabel Mtalimanja, has expressed worry over the number of people that are visiting registration centres in Mzimba District. The third, and last, phase of the exercise is scheduled to close on December 11 this year.
Speaking when she inspected registration centres in the Northern Region district, she urged eligible voters to exercise their right by registering to vote in the September 16 2025 Local Government, Parliamentary and Presidential Elections.
“Citizens must treat voter registration as a priority,” Mtalimanja said.
She said those that do not have national identity cards would be helped by National Registration Bureau (NRB) officers who are stationed at registration centres.
“People should undergo NRB registration processes while there is still time. They should not wait until the last day of voter registration,” Mtalimanja said.
Some of the people we interviewed said they were yet to register because they were busy with farm work.
“But I will definitely register within the timeframe. For now, I am planting maize seed,’ said Lusungu Jere, a farmer.
Meanwhile, National Initiative for Civic Education Public Trust Programme Officer for Mzimba District, Aaron Luhanga, has said they have intensified awareness campaigns so that people can register and, come elections day, choose leaders of their choice.
“We are visiting places and mobilising people to go to voter registration centres and do the needful; that is, registering,” Luhanga said.
Apart from Mzimba, voter registration is taking place in Lilongwe, Lilongwe City, Mangochi, Mangochi Municipality, Mwanza, Chikwawa and Nsanje
