State Vice President Michael Usi on Monday endorsed the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), which is governing the country.
The move comes as the country is preparing for the September 16 2025 Local Government, Parliamentary and Presidential Elections.
Addressing people at Senior Chief Nthache Community Ground in Mwanza District,
Usi—who visited the Southern Region district to woo eligible voters to register in the ongoing Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec)-administered voter registration exercise—said “Boma ndi lomweli”.
This implies that there is no need for voters to swap the current administration for any other in next year’s elections.
The Vice President was quick to say people had to register for next year’s elections so that they could continue enjoying what he described as development initiatives that are being implemented by the current administration.
“Morale cannot put leaders of your choice in power. It is your vote that puts them in power. You need to register so that you should be able to exercise your right to vote. If you want, which I know is the case, to have a continuation of all the development initiatives that have been mentioned here, and for your lives to develop, you need to vote,” Usi said.
Usi added that campaign time would come, when he would tell eligible voters who to trust with their votes.
The Vice President also assured people that the current administration was committed to addressing challenges they were facing, citing hunger.
He also encouraged people to work hard in their endeavours, saying this was key to the attainment of Malawi 2063 vision goals.
Usi also advised people to be law-abiding by, among other things, refraining from vandalism and elderly people abuse.
Usi made a number of stops, including at Kayera Health Post and Thambani Health Centre.
At Kayera Health Post, the Vice President urged healthcare workers to continue serving the country with diligence.
“I am urging you, healthcare workers, especially the youth— who are energetic—to continue working hard,” Usi said.
After interacting with traditional leaders, Senior Chief Nthache commended Usi for the visit.
He said community members were elated with the quality of the house the government had constructed for him.
On her part, Member of Parliament for Mwanza West Joyce Chitsulo appealed for more food aid.
“Most people were affected by the dry spell,” Chitsulo said.
She also urged the current administration to construct Thambani road, saying it becomes impassable during the rainy season.
Chitsulo also appealed to the government to extend Kayera Health Post, saying it needed additional blocks.
Meanwhile, UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala has said there is a need to understand exactly what the Vice President meant.
“There is a need to seek clarification from the VP, who is a member of UTM, because, as we have always said, UTM is not in government. We are out of the alliance and, so, there is a need to really understand what he meant—being the one who uttered those words,” Njawala said.
Njawala also said the UTM leadership would find time to enquire into the issue because they felt that the Vice President’s words could mean a lot in politics.
Currently, Mec is conducting the last phase of the voter registration exercise in Lilongwe District, Lilongwe City, Mzimba, Mangochi, Mangochi Municipality, Mwanza, Chikwawa and Nsanje.
The phase runs up to December 11 2024.
So far, preliminary figures indicate that over 4.6 million people have registered in the voter registration exercises, which commenced on October 21 2024.
Of the figure, over 2.2 million people registered in the first phase while over 2.4 million people registered in the second phase, which ended on November 22 2024.
