Human rights activists have called on the government to consider establishing a task force on the prevention of suicide in the country.
The call has been made by Men Arise Now (MAN) at a time when the country has registered 281 suicide cases in the first half of 2024, of which the majority are men.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Watson Shawa, Executive Director for the organization, while describing the figures as alarming, called for swift action against suicide.
Shawa has also called on President Lazarus Chakwera to be the champion of men’s rights in the country.
Meanwhile, Dr. Chiwoza Bandawe, a mental health expert, has called on men to open up whenever they are facing challenges to prevent the buildup of stress, which leads to suicide.
