There was tension in parliament today when the opposition Democratic Progressive Party demanded the release of an investigation report on an aircraft crash that killed the country’s vice president.
The leader of the opposition, Dr. George Chaponda, called for the findings of the report, which was released by the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, to be presented to the house.
A plane carrying the late Vice President Saulosi Chilima crashed on June 10, 2024, killing him and eight others on board.
However, Jacob Hara, the chief whip of the government side, said that the government could not comment on or present the preliminary report since it was conducted by the German agency.
This response did not go well with Shadreck Namalomba, the Member of Parliament for Mangochi South West, who insisted that the matter was of national importance and needed to be discussed.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Namalomba alleged that he is being intimidated for his strong stance on making the plane crash investigation report public.
“I would also want to know what caused the aircraft crash, of course I am also under threats, let me tell you I am under threats, Shadreck Namalomba is under threats anything can happen” said Namalomba.
Meanwhile, Richard Chimwendo Banda, leader of the house, chose not to comment on the matter but mentioned that the first week of August had been a mix of ups and downs.
On Wednesday, members of the democratic progressive party walked out of parliament against recommendations made by the parliamentary committee on natural resources for a reasonable adjustment of fuel price by Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority.
