The Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) campus in Thyolo District was abuzz with excitement Thursday, as the tertiary education institution held its fifth graduation ceremony.
Six hundred and ten students, comprising 430 males and 180 females, received degrees across various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
The event coincided with the university’s 10th anniversary, giving it an opportunity to celebrate a decade of academic excellence, research and innovation.
President Lazarus Chakwera presided over the event.
The First Citizen also toured university facilities, including the campus clinic and library, during his visit.
In his address to the graduands, Chakwera emphasised the importance of taking initiative in shaping their future and contributing to Malawi’s development.
“You must be ready when opportunities knock at your door, and if they don’t knock, you must be willing to chase them because opportunities are moments that you need to create, sometimes even when they don’t seem to be there,” Chakwera said.
When her turn came, Must Vice Chancellor Professor Address Malata reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to providing quality education that builds the country’s human capital.
“Our focus is not only on providing knowledge but on ensuring that our graduates contribute meaningfully to the development of the country,” Malata said.
Among the graduates was Patience Yaruma, who earned a bachelor of science in water quality and management.
She expressed excitement and readiness to make a positive impact in her field.
“I’m thrilled to graduate today and look forward to applying what I’ve learned to help improve water management and contribute to sustainable development in Malawi,” Yaruma said.
The event was held under the theme ‘Celebrating A Decade of Excellence: Inspiring An Era of Lasting Impact’.
