Malawi Health Equity Network (Mhen) member Aamon Lukhele has said mother care groups are crucial in mobilising women and children to access vaccines in their communities.

He said this on Saturday in Chikangawa, Mzimba on the sidelines of a series of training sessions the organisation is conducting with mother care groups on immunisation services.

Lukhele said mother care groups have helped in ensuring that barriers to equitable and quality immunisation are reduced through improved uptake of immunisation services and tracing defaulters.

Lukhele: The groups are crucial
in mobilising women

He said: “In the past, the Ministry of Health conducted a survey which showed low uptake of vaccines among children and women of child bearing age.

“This is the reason the government established the mother care groups to help in sensitising and mobilising communities on the importance of promoting immunisation services and we are glad that these care groups are doing a great job in the communities.”

A cold chain technician at Mzimba District Hospital’s  Department of Expanded Immunisation Programme, Yautula Nkowani commended Mhen for the training, saying mother care groups are crucial in assisting health workers in immunisation programmes.

However, Chikangawa Mother Care Group chairperson Cecelia Chirwa said their work to disseminate messages and mobilise women and children to access vaccines is being hampered by mobility challenges.

In partnership with Tovwirane Organisation, Mhen is implementing the Health System Immunisation Strengthening project in Mzimba District with funding from Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation.
