Mother care groups asked to intensify their efforts

Centre for Research and Development Initiative (Ceradi) in Mchinji District has embarked on a refresher training for 12 mother care groups from hard-to-reach areas.

Ceradi senior officer Lisungu Chiumia said the training was initiated to remind the groups of topics such as their roles both maternal and antenatal, group management and advocacy on health related issues among others.

She made the remarks when closing the two-day refresher trainings organised for Tadala mothers care group of senior group village head (SGVH) Tsamphale, Senior Chief Mlonyeni in the district.

Malawi Health Equity Network (Mhen) health system immunisation strengthening project officer Kumbesi Gomile said they wanted to revamp and strengthen the groups to improve uptake of medical immunisation among women and children and other health services in the remote and hard to reach areas.

“We have supported them with finances for the training and now we are asking them to engage the next gear in their efforts.

“To ensure sustainability of the mother care groups, the committee members need to cement cordial working relationships with community leaders and other stakeholders working in their community,” she said.

Mchinji District Hospital senior health surveillance officer Johans Chirwa and senior group village head Tsamphale thanked Ceradi and Mhen for the timely support which they said would go a long way in reviving the mothers care groups.The project has been made possible with financial support of over K20 million from GAVE through its umbrella board Malawi Equity Health Network (Mehn).
