Residents of Area 49 in Lilongwe have taken the Lilongwe City Council (LCC) to task over the halting of the construction of a vital road project.
The project, designed to connect Gulliver and Shire was scheduled for completion by November 2023.
However, construction has failed to materialise, prompting frustration among residents.
Recently, the community petitioned the council through a letter dated May 10. The letter expresses concerns over the ongoing delays and the inconvenience caused by necessary road diversions.
Residents urge the council to immediately instruct the project contractor to resume construction.
Reads part of the letter: “Completing the bridge at Pentecostal Life (PLFM) will lead to the opening of the road and reduce inconveniencing the residents as they are being forced to use alternative roads which are very uncomfortable and generate too much dust.”
The council’s public relations officer Tamara Chafunya cites delayed contractor payments as the main reason for the stalled progress.
She said: “The contractor commenced work on 10th June after being paid and is targeting to complete the box culvert and 1km of road surfacing.”
However, a site visit on June 21, revealed no visible activity, raising doubts about the contractor’s stated timeline.
The council is yet to address this discrepancy.
The total project cost is K3.4 billion, with K1.1 billion reportedly already paid to the contractor for completed work to date.
