Malawians should brace for more blackouts as the Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) has confirmed that 83.4 megawatts (MW) are off the national electricity grid due to faults on machines at its three hydropower stations.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Moses Gwaza, spokesperson for EGENCO, said that following the faults at Tedzani 3, Kapichira, and Mkula B, the power generating company is currently producing 284.1MW.
Gwaza has, however, assured the nation that EGENCO is working tirelessly to fix the faulty machines and that funds for the project are available.
According to Gwaza, EGENCO expects to complete works on the machine at Mkula B, which will add 20MW back to the national grid.
At the Kapichira Power Station, Gwaza said EGENCO is waiting for the equipment manufacturer’s assessment report, whose team was in the country two weeks ago.
Gwaza added that EGENCO has signed a contract with the equipment manufacturer for the machine at Tedzani to be fixed.
