Minister says security is tight

Homeland Security Minister Ken Zikhale Ng’oma has said security is tight ahead of the upcoming festive season.

Malawians are preparing for Christmas and New Year festivities tomorrow and after December 31, respectively.

Speaking at a press conference held in Lilongwe Monday, Zikhale Ng’oma said the government had deployed police officers across the country and allocated the Malawi Police Service (MPS) enough vehicles for patrols.

“We are now preparing for the festive season, a period often marked by increased cases of incidents and accidents. Many of these occur when people, after consuming alcohol excessively, drive at high speed or overload vehicles,” Zikhale Ng’oma said.

The minister commended MPS for its ongoing efforts in investigating and apprehending suspected criminals.

Zikhale Ng’oma said there was progress in curbing cases of crime, such as the killing of persons with albinism, which he noted had been eliminated through concerted efforts by security agencies.

“The Homeland Security Ministry, working with MPS and other agencies, has implemented measures to ensure everyone remains safe during this vital period,” he said.

Zikhale Ng’oma appealed to people to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure safer communities during and beyond the festive season.

For home safety, he advised citizens and residents of Malawi who would be attending prayer sessions or celebrations to leave responsible and trustworthy individuals in charge of their homes.

On road safety, the minister warned against speeding, reckless overtaking and driving under the influence of alcohol.

“We urge all road users to exercise caution to minimise the risk of road accidents. Police officers have already been strategically deployed to public spaces to maintain peace and order,” Zikhale Ng’oma said.
