Mec missing records review ‘in progress’

Mec missing records review ‘in progress’

The Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has said it is actively working to establish and rectify missing records as part of its ongoing electoral management process.

This follows concerns raised by various political parties over discrepancies in voter data, which some stakeholders fear could affect upcoming electoral activities.

Mec spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said the commission had already embarked on a thorough review process to determine the extent of the missing records and how best to rectify the issue.

Mwafulirwa could, however, not specify how many records were missing or what had caused the discrepancies.

“The process of reviewing and rectifying the missing records is still ongoing. Our team is actively working on this and we will provide an update in due course once we have more information to share,” Mwafulirwa said.

The electoral body’s spokesperson said Mec remained committed to transparency and would engage stakeholders, including political parties, to present a detailed report once the review was complete.

“We are planning to meet with political parties and stakeholders, where we will present all the issues,” he said.

Shadrick Namalomba

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) spokesperson Shadrick Namalomba said Mec must act swiftly to address the concerns to avoid unnecessary speculation.

“This is a serious matter because we are heading towards elections. If the electoral body has missing records, they must explain why and assure us that this will not affect the integrity of the elections,” Namalomba said.

Civil society activists Willy Kambwandira also urged Mec to be more transparent about the review process.

“This issue is not just about Mec but about the credibility of our elections. Malawians need to know what went wrong, how it is being fixed and what guarantees there are that it will not happen again,” Kambwandira said.
