The Catholic University of Malawi (Cunima) has appointed seasoned corporate lawyer, academician and administrator James Kaphale its new dean of the faculty of law.

Cunima vice-chancellor Ngeyi Ruth Kanyongolo said in an appointment letter, Kaphale’s appointment is effective July 10 2024.

New Cunima law dean: Kaphale

Kaphale, a holder of master of laws degree and a PhD student at University of Malawi (Unima), takes over from another seasoned legal practitioner Gracian Zubelu Banda who has reportedly taken an international job with the United Nations (UN) in Kenya.

“Having made necessary consultations and satisfied myself with your vast experience and expertise in the field of law I am pleased to appoint you dean of the faculty of law effective 10th July 2024,” reads the letter.

According to the vice-chancellor, Kaphale as the faculty’s dean will, among others, be the focal point of academic and managerial leadership and attend all senate matters and obligations.

In an interview yesterday, Kaphale said he was humbled by the appointment as it shows the trust the university has in his capabilities.

He said: “I will endeavour to work with colleagues in my department to make the faculty of law, a faculty of choice for students wanting to pursue law in Malawi and produce quality lawyers who can serve Malawians better.”

Before joining Cunima, Kaphale worked as executive director of Competition and Fair Trading Competition. He has also served as director of legal services at Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority, director of corporate services and administration at Malawi Housing Corporation and director of administration and company secretary at Agricultural development and Marketing Corporation.
