By Mercy Matonga:
The government has told the Public Affairs Committee (Pac) that the responsibility for and efforts to recover the country’s economy are shared among all stakeholders.
This follows remarks made by Pac on the state of the country during a meeting between members of the quasi-religious body and President Lazarus Chakwera at State House in Lilongwe on Monday.
In response to the sentiments, Minister of Information and Digitalisation Moses Kunkuyu said Malawians should remember that recovering the economy is a collective responsibility.
“As such, we are hopeful that with the substantial influence institutions like Pac have, they will work with the government to continue championing the expedited handling of corruption cases that are already underway,” Kunkuyu said.
However, Kunkuyu acknowledged the efforts of faith leaders to provide checks and balances to the government.
“As government, we shall always regard Pac highly and never take its concerns lightly or blindly. The government understands that services to the public should drive its agenda above all else.
“It is for this reason that we remain indebted to the continued guidance provided by all our key stakeholders, with Pac being one of them,” Kunkuyu added.
On Monday, during the meeting, Pac Chairperson Patrick Thawale told Chakwera that his government has failed to improve the country’s economy and fight corruption.
“Your Excellency, in your manifesto, you state, ‘In fighting corruption, therefore, the MCP’s capable democratic developmental state will not only take steps to increase incomes but also to improve the people’s standard of living.’
“Your Excellency, currently the standard of living in Malawi is disastrous. Prices of basic commodities do not match the income earned by your followers. It is the talk of the town that your government has failed to manage the economy,” Thawale said.
On the other hand, the quasi-religious organisation praised Chakwera’s administration for what it called efforts to improve the country’s road infrastructure and Malawi’s relations with other countries.
