The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) Board of Directors has revealed that it has launched an investigation into corruption allegations within the organisation.
According to Escom Board Chairperson Gospel Kazako, the board has been receiving complaints from service users about alleged corrupt practices within the corporation.
Kazako said the probe was premised on uncovering the truth behind allegations of corruption, abuse of power and financial mismanagement within Escom.
He cited instances where Escom workers allegedly receive money from people who seek to be connected to the national electricity grid but fail to deliver or delay the connection.
Kazako said there was a need to change some formalities at Escom to improve service delivery.

“The board is concerned about these practices and wants to change them to ensure that when Escom receives payment, customers are connected to electricity promptly,” Kazako said.
National Advocacy Platform Executive Director Benedicto Kondowe has lauded the board for the move.
“The Escom Board’s commitment to investigating issues of alleged corruption is a welcome move.
“However, true reform will require concrete actions beyond just inquiries. The company must implement strict accountability measures, improve service transparency and undertake systemic reforms to close loopholes that enable such practices. There is also a need for strong enforcement mechanisms to rebuild public trust and ensure efficiency in electricity connections,” Kondowe said.
