Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda told Parliament Thursday that the ongoing political violence in the country can be resolved by the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Chimwendo Banda made the remarks in Parliament following concerns raised by Mulanje Bale lawmaker Victor Musowa, who expressed fears for his security after allegedly being nearly attacked by unknown individuals on Wednesday.
Musowa said a group of unidentified individuals carrying pangas nearly attacked him and other parliamentarians around Area 18 in Lilongwe. He alleged that the same group also injured some civil servants who were attempting to march to Parliament Building.
“This is a very serious issue,” Musowa said.
In response, Chimwendo Banda condemned the violence.
“I stand here today because this violence is mainly coming from the DPP and MCP. These two parties must take responsibility for addressing [the problem of] violence in this country. I don’t see the UDF [United Democratic Front] propagating violence; it is DPP and MCP. Unfortunately, some of us, as members of Parliament, are fuelling it,” Chimwendo Banda said.
He further said that everyone has a role to play in stopping the violence, regardless of when it started, and that it must be condemned.
On his part, DPP Chief Whip in Parliament Jappie Mhango denied his party’s involvement in any form of violence.
“Our members are not involved in violence. In fact, they have been victims of it,” Mhango said.
