United Nations Resident Coordinator Rebecca Adda-Dontoh has urged the country’s Peace Commission not to take Malawi’s peace for granted.

Adda-Dontoh made the remarks in Lilongwe Thursday during a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony between the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission (MPUC) and Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD).

It is premised on promoting peace and unity in the country ahead of the September 16, 2025 Local Government, Parliamentary and Presidential Elections.

She stressed the importance of sustained efforts to promote peace and unity in the country as the country has been peaceful for many years.

“We need to work hard to create spaces that, if there is a disagreement, should be trusted structures to resolve it,” Adda-Dontoh said.

CMD Chairperson Elias Chakwera said they believed that peace created the necessary environment for all parties to operate in.

“Peace is not just the absence of war,” Chakwera said

MPUC Vice Chairperson Reverend Zach Kawalala said the partnership aimed to engage leaders from political parties in promoting peace and condemning any form of conflict.

“By working together, we will be able to address potential flashpoints and mitigate risks, fostering a conducive environment for citizens,” Kawalala said.

The Malawi Peace and Unity Commission was established in December 2023.
