Bishop Martin Mtumbuka is new head of Catholic Church in Malawi

By Mercy Matonga:

The Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB), formerly known as Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), has appointed Bishop Martin Anwel Mtumbuka of the Diocese of Karonga as its new leader.

This means Mtumbuka is now the head of the Catholic Church in Malawi, succeeding Archbishop George Tambala of Lilongwe Archdiocese.

This is according to a statement released and signed by secretary general Valeriano Tseka.

“The Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB) wishes to inform the entire Catholic community in Malawi and beyond, all partner organisations and groupings, and all people of good will, that in line with the statutes governing the operations and internal organisation of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops in Malawi, the MCCB has, as of Friday, 31st January 2025, elected new office bearers for the period from January 2025 to January 2028,” the statement reads.

Mtumbuka will be serving alongside Right Reverend Peter Adrian Chifukwa who has been appointed as vice president.

Tambala, who was holding the position, has been appointed as President for Finance.

MCCB is the Catholic Church’s governing body in Malawi and promotes the Catholic Church’s teachings on unity, justice, peace and solidarity.
