Seven envoys Tuesday presented letters of credence to President Lazarus Chakwera, with Jamaica and Swedish ones committing to enhance bilateral relations with Malawi.
The two were speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
The seven ambassadors are non-residential.
Jamaican envoy to Malawi Joan Elaine said her country looked forward to improving bilateral relations.
“We believe there is a lot we can share with Malawi. Jamaica is known for sports and we believe we can share something in that area,” Elaine said
She added that Jamaica was looking forward to exchanging culture through music as there had been Jamaican musicians who have been coming into the country for music performances.
On his part, Per Lingärde, the ambassador-designate for the Republic of Sweden, said his country would continue to support Malawi.
He said, right now, his country is facilitating the movement of relief maize from Ukraine to Malawi to help those who have been affected by hunger.
“We discussed [issues such as] the drought situation, humanitarian situation and we also discussed the issue pertaining to the delivery of 19,200 tonnes of maize from Ukraine. It was sourced with support from Sweden,” Lingärde said.
Speaking to journalists, Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo said Malawi would benefit from the relationships as there were countless things that could be shared.
“Each and every country is special in its own way,” Tembo said.
Embassies are instituted to implement the Malawi Government’s Foreign Policy with other countries of accreditation, with an emphasis on sustainable development diplomacy in the areas of trade, investment, tourism and international cooperation.
