The Malawi Revenue Authority has acquired a cargo scanner to streamline the clearance process at the Mchinji One Stop Border Post.
The purchase of the scanner has a total budget of 1.6 million US dollars with support from the World Bank under the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity project.
In an interview with MIJ Online Steve Kapoloma, Head of Corporate Affairs at the Malawi Revenue Authority, said that the new cargo scanner is anticipated to enhance data exchange between border officers and central inland stations, thus facilitating smoother cargo clearance.
Kapoloma also mentioned that a contract has been awarded to NUCTECH of China to supply the mobile cargo scanner, which is expected to be fully operational by the end of October 2024.
He added that MRA plans to establish new Inland Examination Centers in Lilongwe and refurbish the Blantyre IEC site, with a total estimated budget of USD 4 million.
Meanwhile, the authority has implemented Border Clearance and Pre-Clearance processes at all border stations starting in July 2023.
This initiative aims to reduce the dumping of Customs-controlled goods intended for transit into the local market and promote fair trade for compliant traders by controlling the dumping of goods.
