Education authorities in Dedza have commended World Vision Malawi and Healthwise organisation for running quiz competitions for primary schools in the district.

Speaking on Tuesday during the competition’s finals held at Dedza Boma, Kalinyeke Zone primary adviser Bernard Kumanda said the quiz was motivating learners and teachers to work hard.

“Due to its competitive nature, learners are now reading hard to be selected into quiz clubs to represent their school. In the end, they are improving their performance,” he said.

The winners hold their trophy

Kumanda also thanked World Vision for supporting the education sector in the district through the construction of classroom blocks, teachers’ houses and provision of learning materials.

The quiz competition, which is conducted with technical expertise from Healthwise, ran for 10 months and involved 16 schools from World Vision’s Tchesa Area Programe in Traditional Authority Tambala in the district.

Speaking during the event, Healthwise executive director Tendai Chidzero said the quiz aims to promote learners’ passion for studies.

“The intervention also instills the spirit of team work and time management among the learners,” she said.

World Vision Dedza district programmes manager Chikumbutso Kamwendo said the competition has helped learners to appreciate the value of education.

He said the competition was one of the interventions to promote retention in schools.

At the end of the day, Ntcheu Primary School beat Fumbwa Primary School to lift the trophy.

The winners also got soap, match balls and exercise books while the runners up received match balls, exercise books and ballpoint pens.
