By Pemphero Malimba:
The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has fired Nsanje Lalanje lawmaker Gladys Ganda from the position of director of elections, barely 23 days after the party’s owners voted her into the position at its elective conference held in Blantyre.
Ganda was supposed to hold office for five years.
The party has since reassigned her to a less important position of presidential adviser.
Her reassignment came barely a day after she praised President Lazarus Chakwera for a number of projects he is implementing in the Shire Valley, where she comes from.
Speaking on Monday during a whistle stop tour at Sorgin Trading Centre in Nsanje District, Ganda said Chakwera was implementing development projects regardless of administrative regions.
“Inu ndi pulezidenti wa dziko, si inu wa chipani chokha. Nde anthu adzimvetsetsa kuti munthu ukakhala pulezidenti wa dziko umafika paliponse, kuchita chitukuko [you are the State President and not just party president. As such, people should understand that when you are State President, you need to go everywhere and implement development projects],” she said.
DPP secretary general and national publicity secretary Peter Mukhito and Shadric Namalomba, respectively, revealed Ganda’s reassignment through separate press statements.
However, the two did not disclose the reasons behind the reassignment.
Ganda was not available for a comment as she did not respond to this reporter’s calls and WhatsApp text messages.
Meanwhile, political analyst Wonderful Mkhutche has described the reassignment as continued lawlessness by the party leadership.
“The reassignment shows that DPP keeps on [fertilising] lawlessness because if they value the law, they could have thought otherwise—maybe just summoning the legislator for further explanation, unlike doing what they have done,” Mkhutche said.
Another political analyst George Chaima described the reassignment as a continuous trend of lack of intraparty democracy.
“This [reassignment] is contrary to the true wishes and freedom of choice by party delegates.
This defeats the whole purpose of democracy, which is very unfortunate because although she has been assigned to a different position, this is not the will of delegates,” Chaima said.
He observed that praising the current administration on public projects was not a sin.
