British envoy challenges Chevening scholars

By Wezzie Gausi :

British High Commissioner to Malawi Fiona Ritchie has challenged the 2024- 25 cohort of Chevening Scholars to play a leading role in fostering Malawi’s development agenda after studying in the United Kingdom (UK).

This year, 27 Malawians are going to the UK to study under Commonwealth and Chevening scholarships.

In an interview after waving off the cohort at her residence in Lilongwe, Ritchie said the scholars should bring back the skills they will gain from the scholarship to develop the country.

She said there is no need to mention the challenges facing the country, which need joint efforts to deal with.

“We are happy that Malawi continues to send people to the UK to study. This is a golden opportunity that one can have in their lives. It is our sincere hope that these scholarships continue to strengthen the relationship that is there between Malawi and the UK,” Ritchie said.

One of the Chevening scholars Pauline Mbukwa said she was grateful for being part of the cohort.

Since 1983, Chevening has been building a global network of 57,000 alumni who are creating positive change across the world.
