Mzuzu Catholic Diocese Auxiliary Bishop Yohane Suzgo Nyirenda Sunday asked President Lazarus Chakwera to patch roads in the Northern Region, saying most of them become impassable during the rainy season.
Nyirenda also lamented the abandonment of some of the roads where construction works already started.
The bishop said this Sunday when he celebrated mass at St Peter’s Cathedral in Mzuzu City.
Chakwera and First Lady Monica attended the mass.
Among other things, the bishop cited construction of Mzalangwe-Kafukule Road, which stalled.
“Many roads are in bad shape and we struggle to reach our Christians. Others which were earmarked for upgrading to bitumen standard are also not progressing convincingly.
“If funds permit, may you please work on these roads or make sure that they are graded so that they are passable throughout the year,” Nyirenda said.
He then commended the government for commencing work on the M1 Road, further asking for speedy completion.
Chakwera did not speak in the church but responded to Nyirenda when they bade farewell, saying he would look into the challenges raised.
During the service, Chakwera supported a fundraising activity at the church with K2 million.
St Peter’s Cathedral Council Chairperson Charles Maloya commended Chakwera for supporting their activity, whose proceeds would be used for constructing a church in one of the outstations.
“This money will make a difference and we really thank the President and the entire State House team for supporting us this Golden Sunday,” Maloya said.
Mzuzu Diocese has over 200 primary schools, 10 secondary schools, four colleges and health facilities.
It also complements the government in areas such as agriculture and good governance.
