The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has initiated disciplinary action against Silver Strikers, Ekhaya FC, and Ekhaya FC goalkeeper Elias Missi following troubling incidents during the recent TNM Super League fixtures.
The league body cited misconduct, unsporting behaviour, and actions that undermine the integrity and safety of Malawi’s top-flight football.
Silver Strikers are facing charges for failing to control their supporters during a recent goalless draw against MAFCO FC at Silver Stadium. According to SULOM, the home fans were involved in acts of intimidation, including pouring an unidentified liquid on MAFCO’s goalkeeper and breaching the field of play in a manner that endangered players and officials.
The most disturbing moment occurred during halftime, when a fan reportedly evaded security and poured what appeared to be urine on the goal Silver was set to attack in the second half. Eyewitnesses described stewards as unresponsive, heightening concerns over matchday security and fan management.
Further unrest followed the final whistle, with additional reports indicating that liquids were again thrown at MAFCO players as they exited the pitch. SULOM has condemned the incidents, warning that such behaviour risks tarnishing the league’s reputation and compromising fair play.
In a separate incident, Ekhaya FC goalkeeper Elias Missi has been formally charged with violent conduct. During a heated match against FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Missi was seen in a widely circulated video grabbing striker Babatunde Adepoju by the neck and allegedly kicking him.
The league has also levelled charges against Ekhaya FC as a club, accusing it of damaging the reputation of league sponsor TNM plc and bringing the competition into disrepute. The accusations reflect growing concerns over on-field discipline and the conduct of club representatives in high-stakes fixtures.
Referee Michael Mwambyale, who officiated the match between Ekhaya and Bullets, has been suspended for three months by the National Referees Committee after failing to take disciplinary action during the violent episode.
All individuals and clubs involved are expected to appear before the SULOM Disciplinary Committee in the coming days. SULOM has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on misconduct and vowed to uphold the principles of professionalism, safety, and sportsmanship in the Malawian top-tier league.
