Minister of Trade and Industry, Vitumbiko Mumba, has underscored the vital importance of ethics in safeguarding all stakeholders involved in Malawi’s construction industry.
During a public lecture themed “Code of Ethics in Malawi’s Construction Industry”, Mumba emphasised that ethical standards are not just guidelines but essential protections for workers, contractors, clients, and the wider community.
“Everyone must be protected in the construction industry by choice of ethics,” he stated, highlighting that ethical behaviour ensures safety, fairness, and accountability throughout the construction process.
The Minister argued that adherence to a robust ethical code prevents exploitation, corruption, and substandard work, thereby creating a more sustainable and trustworthy industry.
Mumba further called on industry players to voluntarily embrace ethics as a core value, not merely as compliance, but as a commitment to professionalism and public welfare.
He noted that protecting lives and investments through ethics will help Malawi meet its infrastructure goals under the Malawi 2063 Vision.
The lecture attracted students, politicians, and industry experts, all engaging in dialogue about how to institutionalise ethical practices across all levels of construction projects.
Mumba’s message serves as a reminder that building a strong, transparent, and safe construction sector requires collective responsibility and unwavering commitment to ethical principles.
