Author of children’s books Lindsay KatchikaChazika, who is also a literary ambassador on Wednesday donated 400 copies of her two books to Biwi LEA Primary School’s Ladder to Learning Literacy Hub in Lilongwe.

Katchika-Chazika said she decided to donate Taonere and Super Chief Kachindamoto to inspire girls to excel better despite all odds against them.

“As a writer and literacy ambassador, I am committed to improving reading proficiencies in public schools through the stories they can find in my inspiring books,” she said.

The author behind the book titled The Meteorite said she will continue with the initiative in Lilongwe, Salima and other districts to help promote reading and writing culture in the country.

Biwi LEA Primary School Headteacher Olive Mandalasi hailed Katchika-Chazika for the book donation saying it will encourage the learners to read.

“These books are very inspirational to our learners, who are 1,030 in total, because some of them (the learners) are going through challenges. So, these books will not only help the learners in the classroom but also inspire them to stay in school,” Mandalasi said.

On his part, Ladder to Learning Programmes Manager Tadeyo Weluzani said the efforts by were timely and hope inspiring. “The donation of these books, inspired by real Malawian heroines, is more than just adding pages to a shelf; it is about placing hope in the hands of our 45,000+ learners across the Ladder to Learning’s 16 partner public schools,” Weluzani said.

During the donation, with support from the Copyright Fund, Katchika Chazika was accompanied by her illustrator Kate Mkandawire.
